Amrun

At A Glance

The Amrun bauxite mine on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, operated by Rio Tinto, is a major open-pit project producing around 22–23 million tonnes of bauxite per year. Located about 40 km south of Weipa, it was developed to replace and expand on the company’s existing regional operations, supporting more than a thousand jobs during construction and ongoing operations. The mine includes large-scale processing facilities and a dedicated export port built for high-capacity shipping. Amrun contributes significantly to Far North Queensland’s economy and continues to expand, with new projects like Norman Creek aimed at unlocking additional reserves and extending the site’s operational life for decades.
